Can boat prop nut be too tight?
I recently purchased a boat for the first time. The motor is a 1964 Merc60 6 hp. I removed the prop to see if there is a shear pin and buy a spare. When putting the prop back on, I tightened the prop as much as I could. Is this correct? Can overtightening hurt anything?
The factory recommends fitting a new nut and tab washer every time the propeller is removed, and I will not tell you to do otherwise. With care I myself re-use nuts and tab washers, but I have not told you to do that. Anti-seize grease is lightly and evenly applied to the cleaned shaft and hub splines, and the prop nut is done up firmly, but not with your full body weight as that will only strain the threads and deform the hub. Then to lock the nut the tabs of the tab washer are carefully bent over the hut and case as required to prevent the nut from undoing. Some earlier types use a simple split pin – this can be re-used, but is only safe if replaced every time. The locking pin or washer is how the nut is secured, over-tightening is useless and will only damage threads and other expensive bits. The splines take all the rotational force, not the nut.
All lock-washers, lock-nuts and lock pins are considered single use items, there is no guarantee if you are re-using any of these things – so be sure you are happy with your decision.
